A Simple Way to Build A Reading List

One of the most intimidating aspects of beginning a self-directed education is:  where do I start?
This is probably the biggest obstacle for most people.  On the conveyor belt you always had somebody telling you what the next assignment was.  Now you have to create the assignments for yourself.

So here it is, the easiest way I know of to get started (if you don't have access to a coach or mentor):
  1. Choose your area of study (leadership, marriage, finances, etc.)
  2. Do a little research to find out what book in that area is getting the best reviews and feedback by readers.
  3. Buy that book.
  4. As you read that book, write down every book, or person, that the author references.  This can also be accomplished by looking at the "end notes" or bibliography.
  5. Start working your way down your new list.
  6. Keep adding to your list.
  7. Build a Mastermind group that you can share ideas with, and discuss what you are learning and what they are learning. (check out our Leadership Challenge Group)
There it is.  That is probably the easiest way to get your education started.  Feel free to make it more complex than that if you want, but I highly recommend keeping it simple.  Even as you become a veteran student I think you will find out that simpler is always better than complex.

God bless
